| Abstract: | This small collection comprises a personal diary kept by Major-General Sir Francis Cunningham Scott, KCB, KCMG, when he served as a Major with the 42nd (The Highland) Regiment of Foot during the Ashanti War of 1873-1874. |
Major-General Sir Francis Cunningham Scott was born in 1834, and died on 26 June 1902. He joined the Army on the 24 November 1852 as an Ensign in the 42nd (The Highland) Regiment of Foot, he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Regiment, 18 August 1854; promoted to Captain, 6 September 1855; Major, 26 March 1868; Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel, 1 April 1974; Colonel, 1881; Honourary Major-General 25 March 1896.
He served in the Crimean War, 1854-1855 at the battles of Alma and Balaklava, on an expedition to Kertch and Yenikale, and at the siege and fall of Sevastopol, received medal with 3 clasps, Medjidie medal, 5th class, and Turkish medal. During the Indian Mutiny, 1857-1858, he served at Cawnpore, Seraighat, Khodagunj, Shumsabad, the siege and fall of Lucknow, attack of fort Rooyah, Ally Gunge, and the attack and capture of Bareilly, he received a medal with clasp. During the Ashanti War, 1873-1874, he served at the battle of Amoaful, commanded the 42nd Foot at the capture and destruction of Becquah, battle of Ordahsu (wounded), and capture of Coomassie, twice mentioned in despatches 1874, received a medal with clasp; Inspector-General of Gold Coast Constabulary, 1891; directed operations against the Jebus on the West Coast of Africa, 1892; commanded the Ashanti Expedition, 1895-1896; and command of the local forces in Trinidad and Tobago, 1898.
He received a CB, 31 March 1874, KCMG, 16 August 1892, and a KCB 31 March 1896.
