Abstract:This collection comprises one letter, photographs and cuttings retrieved from the Royal Australian Naval College journal entitled Magazine.

Biographical Note

Vice Admiral Sir Henry MacKay Burrell, R.A.N., was born in Wentworth Falls, New South Wales on the 13 August 1904, and died on the 9 February 1988.

Burrell was educated at Parramatta High School and the Royal Australian Naval College, Jervis Bay. During his long and distinguished naval career he held various staff and command appointments, including Chief of Naval Staff, 1959-1962; Second Naval Member, 1956-1957; Flag Officer Commanding H.M.A. Fleet, 1955; Assistant Australian Defence Representative, London, 1951-1952; Commander 1940, Captain 1946, and Naval Attache Washington, 1941.

In 1986 he published his autobiography entitled Mermaids do exist : the autobiography of Sir Henry Burrell. He was awarded a KBE in 1960, CB in 1959, and CBE in 1955.
