EndNote Web

EndNote Web is the web-based version of EndNote, provided as part of Web of Science database. The main difference between EndNote Web and EndNote is that EndNote Web has a limit of 10,000 references and EndNote has no limit.

How to use EndNote Web

1. Go to http://www.endnoteweb.com/
2. Sign up for an account. Once you sign up, you can use EndNote Web from any computer.

Collect your references

1. Enter References Manually

  • From EndNote Web, click New Reference (screen left).
  • Select the Reference Type from the pull-down menu (Journal Article, Book, etc.).
  • Fill in the author, year, title, etc. For multiple authors, separate with a semicolon.
  • Under Save To, select the folder to which to save the reference. Click Save and review the reference.
  • To return to EndNote Web, under Select ... choose a folder from the pull-down menu.

2. Transfer references directly from Web of Science

  • In Web of Science mark the references you want to save.
  • Click the Save to My EndNote Web button (screen right).
  • You will be asked to log onto My EndNote Web if you have not already done so.
  • Use the Back button to return to Web of Science.

3. Import References from Databases

  • Search the database of your choice.
  • Save the results according to the directions for the database you are searching.
  • In EndNote Web, click Import in the left-hand menu.
  • Click the Browse to locate the file with your results.
  • Select the type of file you want to import which should match the database you searched.
  • Click Import to bring your results file into EndNote Web.
  • The citations will be placed in the Unfiled folder.
  • Create a folder by clicking on Options.
  • Click the Folders tab.
  • Enter the name you want to give to the new folder.
  • Click Submit.

4. Search a database from within EndNote Web

  • Under Collect References, click on Online Search.
  • Choose the library catalogue you want to search.

Writing papers using EndNote Web and Word

Step 1: Insert reference(s) into a Word Document

1. Install the EndNote Web Plug-in for Word (instructions are on the Web page).
2. To insert a reference into a Word Document, from the Tools menu select EndNote Web and then Find Citations.
3. Type in keyword(s). Click on Search to find the EndNote Web reference(s) you want to insert.
4. Highlight the references you want to insert. Click Insert.

Step 2: Format references in a Word document

1. Open your Word document.
2. From the Tools menu select EndNote Web and then Format Bibiography.
3. In the With output style box, choose an output style from the pull-down menu.
4. Click OK to format your Word document in the output style you selected.
