Lending Services

Lending Services incorporates the Loans and Course Reserve services which are located on the Ground Floor. All loans are issued from the Service desk on the Ground Floor.

Who May Use the Library
In addition to the staff and students of the Australian Defence Force Academy, the Library is open to the public who are welcome to use the Library.

Who May Borrow From the Library
Borrowing privileges are available to undergraduate and postgraduate students and academic, general and military staff of the Academy. Students and staff are issued with an Academy ID card. This ID card is also the Library card. Do not forget your Academy ID card as you cannot borrow without it!

Reciprocal Arrangements
The Library has reciprocal borrowing arrangements with the libraries of the Australian National University, the University of Canberra, the Australian Catholic University (Signadou Campus), Charles Sturt University (St Mark's Theological College) and the University of New South Wales. As part of the University Library Australia scheme, Academy staff and students can register for borrowing privileges at most other Australian university libraries.

Other persons may apply to the Librarian for borrowing privileges, which are fee based. Fees for individual borrowers are $66 per Semester or $122 per annum. Fees include GST.

Borrowing Conditions
The number, and types of items that can be borrowed varies depending on borrower type. See the Borrowing limits chart for numbers and type of material that can be borrowed by the different borrower categories. To borrow material, present your ID card and the item/s at the Service desk.

Returns
Items must be returned to the Library on or before the due date. Do not leave these items on the Service desk. When the Library is open, the returns are to be placed through the internal return chute. For out-of-hours returns, there is a book chute to the left of the main entrance.

Requests (Recalls)
If the item that you need is on loan to someone else, then you can use the Library catalogue to have the item recalled. Once you are in an item record, the Request link in the Library catalogue provides access to an electronic reservation facility. By selecting Recall the item will be flagged to be returned to the Library within 7 days.

Recall Notification
Borrowers holding a recalled item must return it within the prescribed 7 day time limit. Failure to do so will result in the loss of borrowing privileges. If the item is still needed, the returning borrower can place their own recall against the item once it is on loan. If you have placed a request against an item, the Library will notify you via email when the item is available. Requested items will be kept at the Service desk for one week before being returned to the shelves.

Renewals
Items on loan to Academy staff and students can be renewed for a further period if not required by another borrower. Items that are to be renewed should be presented at the Service desk before the due date.

For Academic Staff, a list of items on loan is sent to all staff at the end of each semester. Please check the list to ensure it is correct, then sign the list before returning the list to the Service desk for automatic renewal.

For Off-Campus students, all items must be returned to the Library by the due date before any renewal can be done. If not required by another borrower, these items can be returned to you for a further loan period.

I've Lost my ID Card
If you lose your ID card, please report it immediately to the staff at the Service desk, who will then advise you on how to obtain a replacement card.

I've Lost my Library Item/s!
Please report all lost, damaged or missing library items to the Service desk staff, who will provide a Missing, Lost and Damaged form for you to complete.

REMEMBER YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL ITEMS BORROWED ON YOUR ID CARD - DO NOT LOAN YOUR ID CARD TO ANYBODY OR BORROW BOOKS ON BEHALF OF OTHER STUDENTS

Charges/Fines
Currently the only charges levied by the Library are for lost or damaged items. The charge includes replacement costs and a non-refundable administration fee.

Whilst the Library does not have fines, all borrowing privileges will be suspended if Library materials are not returned by the due date or as requested. Failure to return materials required by other people directly disadvantages others. Continual abuse of the loan system will be regarded as a serious matter.

Library Clearances
If you are taking extended leave or graduating, please ensure you return all library materials and finalise any incurred charges. If graduating you will also need to submit a clearance form at the Service desk.
