This collection consists of assigned reading material that is expected
to be in heavy demand during teaching sessions. There are two components
to the service
- online material (journal articles, chapters of books, ebooks
etc) which can be accessed by searching Course
Reserve via the library catalogue
- physical material (books, DVDs, videos etc) which are located
on the Ground Level of the Library. Note: Personal copies of books
or folders of notes for essays and tutorials will be held behind
the Service Desk.
Placing Items on Course Reserve
To ensure that students have adequate access to material essential
to a particular course, academic staff are encouraged to coordinate
with Library staff who will identify and process the required items.
Lecture notes, personal copies and other items can also be placed
on Course Reserve.
The Library requires:
- accurate citations of material to be placed
on Course Reserve (course reading lists are a very useful resource
for this).
- adequate time before session starts to locate
and process the requested items (ideally up to 4 weeks). If adequate
notice is not given, there is no guarantee that material will
be ready for the start of session.
- the completion of a Course Reserve form (requiring
course name and number, as well as the Lecturer’s name,
School, nominated loan period and other details) which needs to
be completed when submitting course reserve requests.
Preferred Format for Course Reserve Material
Once lists of materials are provided to the Library, each item will
be located and identified whether it can be made available in electronic
format as a first preference. Online material is preferred as access
is simplified for the student who then has access to material 24
hours a day and can print, download or read online at a time and
place that suits them.
If an electronic version of an article or book already exits then
this will be used. If the item is available in print and copyright
regulations permit, an item will be digitised by the Library. For
books which have multiple chapters cited, or where a whole book
has been set for a particular course, or for other material which
cannot be legally digitised by the University, the material is held
in the physical Course Reserve Collection.
Special note for academic staff teaching in the areas of
strategic studies
It is particularly recommended that academic staff teaching
in strategic studies and related areas make use of Course Reserve.
Students at other universities doing similar courses of study are
regular borrowers here and we are also often lending books to many
other organisations. By nominating items for placement in Course
Reserve you ensure that those items are available for the exclusive
use of UNSW@ADFA students and not borrowable by other university
students and will not go out to other organisations on inter library
loan.

Further information of interest relating to Course Reserve, including
information about copyright implications is available from the Library’s
Digitisation Service
web page.
Finding Course Reserve Items
Once they have been placed on Course Reserve, items can be searched
through the online Course
Reserve facility by the Lecturer’s name, School, Course
number/name and Session. Alternately, they can be searched by Author
or Title through the Library’s catalogue. Further information
on searching for Course Reserve items can be found in the catalogue
tutorial.
