Battle of Beersheba - 90th Anniversary (31 October 1917)
Third battle of Gaza

"The Battle of Beersheba took place on 31 October 1917, as part of the Sinai and Palestine campaign during World War I. The Australian 4th Light Horse Brigade, under Brigadier William Grant, charged more than four miles at the Turkish trenches, overran them and captured the wells at Beersheba. This is often reported as "the last successful cavalry charge in history," although cavalry units continued to exist into the early phases of World War II and taking part in operations before being rendered obsolete."

An exciting new exhibition opening on 7 December tells the story of the legendary T. E Lawrence and the Australian Light Horse and their central roles in General Sir Edmund Allenby's campaign against the Turks from Gaza to the northern reaches of Syria during the First World War. Their paths crossed in the advance along and astride the Jordan Valley, and finally came together at Damascus on 1 October 1918.
