Referencing
References, or citations, acknowledge any publication you have used or idea you have quoted or paraphrased in your assignment. These could be resources like books, journal articles and web pages but might also include
- chapters of books
- newspaper articles
- television programs
- emails
- blogs
- works of art
- podcasts
The list of references is an important part of all your assignments. You will be plagiarising if you do not reference all of your sources.
Referencing, or citing, is a way of ensuring that you maintain academic integrity in all of your written assignments and use the materials of others in an ethical way.
A referencing system that is often used at UNSW is called the
Harvard Referencing System. References prepared using this system can either be In-Text or a list of references at the end of the text.
There are many other referencing styles. Your lecturer may advise you on your school's preferred style.
