2. Chronological Coverage
3. Geographical Coverage
4. Does material become dated
in this field? If so, how far back is material generally significant?
Texts on hardware become dated in 5 years, software in 3 years.
Computing texts are generally significant for about 5 years. Mathematics
and other "classical" subjects remain valuable for over
50 years.
5. Language Guidelines
Source materials should be acquired almost exclusively in English.
Translations are only valuable if the translator is technically,
as well as linguistically competent.
6. Electronic Databases
of major relevance
ACM
IEEE
INSPEC (includes Computer & Control Abstracts and Electrical & Electronics
Abstracts)
Proquest
Safari Tech Books
ScienceDirect
7. Topics of related interest
which are not yet being supported from this School's book funds,
either because there
is not yet an extensive program in this area or because it is felt
that another School should buy in this field.
There is some
overlap with PEMS, especially in the area of Operational Research
and Complexity Theory and Number Theory, and also in Geography, Oceanography
and Physics. There is some overlap with ACME for Aeronautical and Mechanical
Engineering, and with the School of Business for Management.
There is a common interest with other schools in distance eductaion/
flexible learning and the IT tools that are used for its delivery.
8. Gaps in the Library Collection, including
electronic resources, which should be amended when funds permit
Public administration literature
9. Bibliographic
Control
The basic sources for both literature searches and bookselection
are:-
DA profile
INSPEC
Publishers' blurbs
SciAm book reviews
References in papers and texts
Computing reviews
Computer and Control Abstracts (INSPEC)
ACM Guide to Computing Literature
Book reviews, particularly those in :-
Publications of IEEE/IEE and ACM
Engineers Australia
Monitor
E Letter [Internet]
Signal, Processing News Group
