Subject Browse - Hints

Results from a Subject Browse will return a browsable list of the American Library of Congress Subject Headings ( LCSH).

There are two ways of using Subject Browse:

  • Using the subject headings from a known title
  • Using a known LCSH

Subject searching from the catalogue record of a known title

We are looking for information on women and contemporary writing. As we do not know the correct LCSH, try a Title Word/s search for a book using terms that relate to these topics.

  1. Search Title Initial words for Contemporary women novelists.

  2. Select the Full view button. This will display all of the Subject Headings that can be used in a Subject Browse, eg. women in literature.

3. Click on the Hyperlink to look at all the items that have the relevant subject heading..

Using known LCSH to do a Subject Browse.

From the example above, women in literature is the correct LCSH term for this subject area.

1. Select Subject Browse and type the term women in literature

The results as shown below indicate that the Library holds 217 titles in this subject area.

2. Click on the links to display the relevant titles.
