Limiting Searches - Search Hints

Limiting is a way of making your search more precise by restricting the results to titles matching a certain criteria. In the catalogue there are two ways to limit your search:

Quick Limit
These are the most commonly used limits, and can be applied at the point of searching. Note: that Quick Limits are only available on the Simple Search page.

1. Select one of the limits from the Quick Limit drop-down menu on the Search List page.
The example below is set to retrieve items in the catalogue that have a title of gladiator and are a DVD.

  • Continue your search as usual
  • NB: Limits can only be used with Keyword, Title and Serial Title searching
  • Search limits will remain in effect until you click on Clear Limits or Exit

Choose Limits

Use this option if the limit you require is not available in Quick Limit, or if you need to use more than one limit at the same time. Choose Limits must be set before you type your search terms.

Important tips to remember when using Choose Limits:

  • Once the selected limits are set, click the Search button and continue your search as usual
  • NB: Limits can only be used with Keyword, Title and Journal Title searching in the Simple Search page
  • Search limits will remain in effect until you click on the clear limits button
  • NB: Choose Limits will provide the best results when used from the Guided Search page

For Example

1.  You want to find books on
architecture that are written in German. Date range and other limits can be set as needed.

  • Click on the Choose Limits button
  • In the Language menu select German
    1. In the item type menu select Book

    2. Click on the set limits button.
    3. Use architecture in the Keyword Anywhere search box, see the example below.
