Journal Title - Search Hints

Journals include serials, newspapers, magazines, periodicals and yearbooks. These may be available in print or electronic form. To find a journal article you need to search the source of the article.

If you have an article citation, make sure that you have identified the title of the journal as distinct from the title of the article.

For Example:

James C Anderson, "Business marketing: understanding what customers value", Harvard Business Review, 76 (6), Nov/Dec 1998: 53-62.

The source of this article in the example above is:  Harvard Business Review.

Important tips to remember when searching for a journal title:

  • type in the words of the title in exact order (eg. Harvard Business Review)
  • omit the, a, an if it is at the beginning of a title
  • you do not need to enter the whole title, just the start of it
  • omit punctuation and capital letters

1.  From the Simple Search screen type harvard business review in the Find This box:
Find This:

2. Select Journal Title from the Find Results in box:

3. Click search

Note: Be aware that if you have a journal article citation, you will not normally find that item catalogued at the individual journal article level. If the article appears on a lecturer's reading list, you will be able to find the item by searching the catalogue by the article title as well as being able to find the item via the Course Reserve search option.

Location and Availability

Within the record, the Location and Call Number will tell you where to find a journal in the Library. There is also information about which recent issues of this journal have been received.

Note: the hyphen after (1968) indicates that the Library continues to receive issues of this journal as they are published. If there is a date after the hyphen, this indicates when the Library stopped receiving issues for this journal. For this example, the Library has all issues from v.46(1968) onwards, but there are some volumes that are incomplete.

If we are looking for volume 76, issue 6 Nov/Dec 1998, the Library holdings above indicate this issue is available.

Links to Electronic Resources

Some journals are available electronically via the catalogue.

  • Look for Location: Electronic Access and Call Number: online
  • To access an online version of the journal, click on the link
  • For more help with using electronic resources to find journal articles see the Service Desk or use the Library's Ask Us service.

Full Text Electronic Journals

Be aware that the Library has access to thousands of journals, bulletins, and newspapers in electronic form, for which there are no records in the main catalogue.

If you are a student or a staff member, you can also search for Full Text Electronic Journals holdings through the Library's Electronic Resources page. Electronic Journals can be searched by Title, ISSN (International Standard Serial Number), Subject categories and alphabetically by Title.
