Guided  Search - Search Hints

Guided Search provides a sequence of search boxes and drop down menus that make it easy to construct more complex searches, particularly when you want to search multiple keywords in different search fields.

To perform a Guided Search:

1. Click on the Guided Search tab.

2. Type the word(s) or phrase you want to search for in the first of the Search For boxes. Use a space between words.

3.  Combine the words in the Search For box by selecting one of the following:

To select an option, use the right arrow to see the menu and click on the one that you wish to select.

NOTE: any of these will find catalogue entries containing at least one of the words in the box, all of these will find entries containing all of the words in the box.

4.  In the Search In box select the field you require (eg. Subject, Table of Contents, Title, etc). The Keyword Anywhere option will search through all of the other fields.

5.  Using the radio buttons below the first Search box, choose either AND, OR or NOT to combine the terms in the first box with the terms in the next box(es).

6.  To add more terms or phrases, repeat the above process in the boxes that follow.

7.  Click search to begin your search.

Important tips to remember when searching for a title:
  • Omit punctuation
  • Do not type the operators AND, OR, NOT in the Search For boxes
  • Leave a space between search terms within a box
  • Use ? to truncate words: nation? will search nation, nations, national...
  • Do not use the Enter key - your search will not be executed
  • Click Reset to clear the Search For boxes
  • For Example:
